Our Story Is All About Protecting Workers
Karmel & Torres, LLC was founded more than 50 years ago in Chicago, Illinois, by Robert Karmel, a veteran of World War II. We were established to protect the rights of employees and provide sound legal guidance for unions. Attorney Karmel passionately believed in the importance of representing unions and workers.
Today, managing attorney Jon Karmel, continues this legacy, maintaining an exclusive focus on employment and labor law from our offices in Chicago and near Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our second generation of advocates provides dedicated representation for workers and unions in diverse industries nationwide.
Experienced Advocacy – Our Lawyers Protect Workers’ Rights Nationwide
Our attorneys share more than 35 combined years of experience in labor and employment law. Lawyer Jon Karmel is AV Preeminent peer-review rated,* the highest rating, through Martindale-Hubbell. He has been named one of Chicago’s top-rated lawyers, and he was selected for inclusion in Illinois Super Lawyers from 2013 to 2019.
Our attorneys are passionate about what they do. They are actively involved in various progressive causes to advance workers’ rights and uphold the importance of collective bargaining and additional employee concerns. You can come to us for representation in the following areas:
- Employment law for workers: You deserve a safe workplace, free of discrimination and hazardous conditions. If you experience these or other issues, then you should speak with an experienced attorney right away. Ours have decades of experience in this area of law, and they are ready to defend your rights as an employee, whether it involves fair wages, Family and Medical Leave Act (FLMA) issues, sexual harassment, breach of contract and other concerns. They only represent workers – not employers – so you can be sure that they are completely on your side.
- Labor law cases: This has been a focus of ours since we were founded. Our lawyers are passionate about protecting union workers’ rights in cases that include collective bargaining agreements, National Labor Relations Board issues, Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act concerns, arbitration for grievances and more. They understand the complexities of labor law and the inner workings of unions. They here to provide the aggressive but nuanced representation that you and your fellow workers need.
- Illinois and Michigan workers’ compensation: On-the-job injuries cause many problems all at once. It’s important to know that your employer’s insurance should cover all your medical expenses and a portion of your lost wages. Make sure that you report your injury to your employer and get medical attention immediately. Our attorneys can help you through the workers’ compensation process, making sure that your paperwork has all the necessary information and protecting your rights if your claim is denied. They can appeal a denial and keep fighting for the benefits you deserve.
